Hyderabad, May 8 (Maxim News): The Department of Geophysics at Osmania University has entered a historic phase with the appointment of Dr. G. Udaya Laxmi as its first woman Head of the Department in its 58 year history.
Dr Udaya Laxmi officially assumed charge on Friday in the presence of faculty members, research scholars, students, staff members, and well wishers. The appointment marks the first time a woman has headed the Geophysics Department since its establishment at Osmania University.
Speaking after assuming office, Dr Udaya Laxmi thanked Vice Chancellor Kumar Molugaram for entrusting her with the prestigious responsibility. She also expressed gratitude to faculty members, staff, scholars, and students for their encouragement and support throughout her academic journey.
She described the appointment as both a matter of pride and responsibility. She said her focus would remain on strengthening academic excellence, encouraging innovative research, and promoting student centric development in the department.
Dr Udaya Laxmi is widely recognized for her academic and research contributions in mineral exploration, groundwater studies, environmental geophysics, remote sensing, and GIS applications. She has more than 16 years of teaching and research experience in the Department of Geophysics at Osmania University.
Her work has received recognition at national and international levels for its contribution to geophysical and environmental sciences. She has successfully guided ten PhD scholars and is currently supervising several researchers working in emerging areas of geophysical and environmental studies.
She has published more than 66 research papers in reputed national and international journals, including Scopus and SCI indexed publications. Apart from research papers, she also contributed book chapters and authored books related to geophysics and groundwater studies.
Dr Udaya Laxmi has been associated with several sponsored research and consultancy projects linked to mineral exploration, gravity surveys, magnetic surveys, groundwater management, and environmental monitoring. Her research work has significantly contributed to groundwater quality assessment, environmental protection, mineral resource exploration, and sustainable geoscientific applications.
In recognition of her outstanding research contributions, she received the Vice Chancellor Award for Research Excellence in 2022. She currently serves as an Executive Council Member of the Indian Geophysical Union. She is also associated with leading professional bodies, including the Association of Exploration Geophysicists and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Faculty members, students, research scholars, and staff members congratulated Dr Udaya Laxmi on her historic achievement. They expressed confidence that her leadership would guide the department toward greater academic progress, advanced research, and higher national and international recognition. (Maxim News)
