Hyderabad, May 11: A woman from Telangana has achieved a rare feat in the United Kingdom politics. Konkati Pujitha won the councillor election in London after defeating 11 candidates in a closely contested local body poll.
Pujitha was elected from the Royal Albert Ward in the London Borough of Newham on behalf of the Green Party. The elections were held on May 7.
She belongs to Gollapalli in Telangana. Pujitha completed her higher education in biotechnology before moving to London for better career opportunities. Last year, she married Kadadoori Srinivas, a native of Anti Mamidipalli. The couple currently resides in London.
The election in Royal Albert ward witnessed stiff competition. Candidates from several major political parties contested the seat. However, Pujitha emerged victorious with strong voter support. Political observers noted that the Green Party made significant gains in areas traditionally considered strongholds of the Labour Party.
During her campaign, Pujitha focused on environmental protection, local civic issues, and public welfare measures. Her outreach among residents and focus on community concerns reportedly helped her secure the victory.
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in her native villages in Peddapalli district and Hanumakonda district after the election results were announced. Family members, relatives, and local residents expressed happiness over a Telangana woman becoming part of the local governance system in London.
Moreover, members of the Telugu community in Britain described her victory as a proud moment for overseas Telugus. They said her success reflected the growing participation of Indians, especially Telugus, in international public life and politics
