Thiruvananthapuram, June 1: The southwest monsoon is poised to make its entry into Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that weather conditions have become favourable for its onset over the state. The arrival of the monsoon over Kerala marks the beginning of India’s annual rainy season and is closely monitored across the country.
The IMD has forecast a significant increase in rainfall activity across the state in the coming days, bringing relief from the intense summer heat while also raising concerns over heavy rain-related hazards.
Orange Alerts Issued in Several Districts
The weather department has issued orange alerts for multiple districts, warning of very heavy rainfall.
The districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram are under orange alert on Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile, Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode have been placed under orange alert on Thursday.
Meteorologists have warned that isolated areas in these districts could receive between 11 and 20 centimetres of rainfall within short periods.
Risk of Floods and Landslides
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain cautious as intense rainfall may trigger flash floods in urban areas and landslides in hilly terrain.
Disaster management agencies and local administrations have increased monitoring and preparedness measures to address potential emergencies. Yellow alerts have also been issued for several other districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall across large parts of the state.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
The approaching monsoon is expected to generate rough sea conditions and strong winds along Kerala’s coastline. Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
Local bodies have accelerated pre-monsoon preparedness works, including clearing drains, canals and waterways to reduce the risk of flooding.
After weeks of scorching temperatures, the expected monsoon showers are likely to bring significant relief to residents and replenish water resources, while also laying the foundation for the rainy season that supports agriculture across much of India.
