Kolkata, June 1: A scheduled meeting convened by Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence was postponed after nearly 60 of the 80 newly elected legislators of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) failed to attend.
Party leaders said the meeting had been planned in advance to discuss several political and organizational issues. However, due to the absence of a large number of MLAs, the meeting was deferred and will be rescheduled at a later date.
TMC spokesperson and MLA Kunal Ghosh said many legislators were engaged in protest activities and assisting party workers who were allegedly facing police action following recent political developments in the state.
According to him, several MLAs informed the party leadership that they were occupied with ground-level activities and requested that the meeting be postponed.
Sources indicated that the meeting was expected to focus on:
- The CID investigation into allegations of forged signatures on a letter related to the Leader of the Opposition post.
- Recent attacks on TMC workers after the Assembly election results.
- Organizational strategy and coordination among newly elected legislators.
- Among those present at the Kalighat residence were:
- Derek O’Brien
- Chandrima Bhattacharya
- Madan Mitra
- Kunal Ghosh
- Other party legislators and senior leaders
Despite the low attendance, Mamata Banerjee reportedly held informal discussions with the leaders who were present.
Party leaders said a new date for the legislative party meeting will be announced soon. The TMC leadership maintained that all legislators remain committed to the party and have communicated their support despite being unable to attend the gathering.
