Hyderabad, June 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the deadly fire incident in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar and announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives.
The Prime Minister announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased victim and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the incident.
At least 20 people were killed and several others were injured after a massive fire broke out at the multi storied Lemon Green Restaurant in Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning, according to officials.
Rescue teams evacuated 37 people from the building and shifted them to nearby hospitals. Authorities said search and rescue operations were continuing to trace anyone who might still be trapped inside.
In a message posted by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
He stated that authorities were providing all possible assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
Senior officials from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, and other emergency response agencies reached the spot and monitored rescue operations.
Fire officials said ten fire tenders were rushed to the location after receiving information about the blaze. The fire was brought under control, but significant damage was reported.
According to officials, some people attempted to jump from the upper floors of the building to escape the flames. Several injured persons remain under treatment, and some are reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the fire while rescue personnel conduct searches across different floors of the building.
