New Delhi, June 3: At least 20 people were killed and several others injured after a massive fire broke out at the multi storied Lemon Green Restaurant in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning.
Officials said 37 people have been rescued and shifted to hospitals, while search and rescue operations are continuing to locate anyone still trapped inside the building.
Senior officials from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, and other emergency agencies rushed to the scene and coordinated rescue efforts.
According to authorities, some occupants attempted to jump from the upper floors of the building to escape the flames. Several injured persons are undergoing treatment, and some are reported to be in critical condition.
Fire officials said ten fire tenders were deployed immediately after the incident was reported. The blaze was brought under control, but extensive damage was caused to the structure.
Speaking to reporters, SDM Jitender Kumar said preliminary findings indicated that a restaurant was operating in the basement of the building.
He said the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but initial indications suggest that the blaze may have originated in the basement area. A detailed investigation is underway.
Kumar also warned that strict action would be taken against those found violating safety regulations or operating illegally under the guise of valid permissions.
Rescue teams continue to search different sections of the building to ensure that no occupants remain trapped.
The incident comes a day after ten people were injured in a suspected LPG cylinder explosion that led to the collapse of a building in Delhi’s Mukundpur area.
Authorities are expected to release further details after the completion of rescue operations and the preliminary inquiry.
