New Delhi, June 5: In a major leadership change, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, ending Suryakumar Yadav’s stint at the helm despite India’s recent strong performances in the format.
The decision was reportedly taken during the BCCI Apex Council meeting as the board begins long-term planning for upcoming ICC events and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature as a competitive sport.
According to sources, Shreyas Iyer is expected to take charge for the first time during India’s upcoming T20I tour of Ireland, followed by a high-profile five-match series against England.
The move signals a clear shift toward building a new leadership group aimed at ensuring stability and continuity in the shortest format of the game.
Selectors are also expected to announce a young and dynamic squad core, reflecting India’s long-term vision for global tournaments.
Shreyas Iyer Strong Captaincy Record in IPL
Shreyas Iyer’s elevation comes after an impressive run as a leader in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, he has built a reputation as a calm and tactical captain across franchises.
His notable achievements include:
- Leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024
- Guiding Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020
- Captaining Punjab Kings to a final appearance in 2025
In addition to leadership success, Iyer has been a consistent performer with the bat, scoring over 600 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate above 175, followed by another strong season in IPL 2026 with nearly 500 runs.
Why Suryakumar Yadav Was Replaced?
Suryakumar Yadav’s removal has surprised many fans, especially after India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign under his leadership earlier this year.
However, selectors reportedly opted for a long-term transition strategy. Factors such as age, workload management, and a dip in recent batting form are believed to have influenced the decision.
During IPL 2026 and the latest T20 World Cup, Suryakumar’s performances were below his usual high standards, prompting calls for a structural reset in leadership.
With Shreyas Iyer at the helm, Indian cricket is expected to enter a new phase focused on youth development, leadership continuity, and preparation for future ICC tournaments.
Selectors are also considering appointing a young vice-captain as part of a broader roadmap for the next decade.
The decision marks one of the most significant leadership transitions in recent Indian T20 history.
