Tehran/Internet/Hyderabad, June 12 (Maxim News) The funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been postponed once again. The mayor of Tehran has announced that the funeral of Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli attack, will be postponed until late June or early July. Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani announced that the funeral will be postponed to between June 26 and July 5 due to the tense situation in West Asia, security reasons, and public mourning events during the month of Muharram.
Iran had previously planned to hold the three-day event at the beginning of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar (early June). However, Mayor Alireza revealed that the funeral will be held after the first ten days of Muharram to allow time for the annual mourning ceremonies held by devotees to commemorate Imam Hussein, the prominent Shiite leader who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala (680 AD).
Tehran officials estimate that about 20 million people will attend the event. Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for nearly 37 years, died at his residence in central Tehran on February 28. The official funeral, originally scheduled for March 4, was postponed due to the war. (Maxim News)
