Hyderabad, June 27: Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) criticised senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi after she questioned the Centre’s position on the Gaza conflict and accused the government of remaining silent.
In an opinion article, Sonia Gandhi alleged that the Union government’s response to the situation in Gaza reflected inaction and raised concerns from both moral and national interest perspectives.
BJP leader T.R. Sriniwas rejected the criticism and said India’s foreign policy focuses on global peace and dialogue.
Sriniwas said India looks at international issues from a broader perspective and supports efforts aimed at reducing violence and encouraging negotiations.
BJP leader Manmeet Singh accused the Congress of practising divisive politics and rejected the allegations made against the government.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC said India had already taken diplomatic and humanitarian steps regarding Gaza through the Ministry of External Affairs and humanitarian assistance.
JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar said India has historically supported Palestine and added that the country does not require validation on its foreign policy position.
Responding to the criticism, Congress leader Pawan Khera defended Sonia Gandhi’s remarks and said the article reflected concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
He argued that expressing concern over civilian suffering should not be viewed through a political or electoral lens.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy also supported Gandhi’s position and said the government should speak more strongly on civilian casualties in Gaza.
The exchange has triggered renewed political debate over India’s approach to developments in West Asia.
