Hyderabad Water Board | Hyderabad, July 7 (Maxim News): The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has decided to expand the use of treated water and strengthen alternative water resource management as its services prepare to extend up to the Comprehensive Urban Renewal and Expansion (CURE) limits.
Managing Director Ashok Reddy directed officials to adopt a scientific and long-term strategy to meet the city’s growing drinking water needs.
The directions came during a review meeting held at the Water Board headquarters in Khairatabad with Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal, Executive Directors, Directors, and senior officials from the Transmission, Operations and Maintenance, and Revenue wings.
Hyderabad Water Board Focuses on Sustainable Water Management
Ashok Reddy instructed officials to identify government institutions, private organisations, stadiums, prisons, large gated communities, and private sewage treatment plants (STPs) to promote the wider use of treated water.
He also directed officials to organise a dedicated workshop for operators of private STPs with a treatment capacity of more than 50 kilolitres.
The workshop will encourage the use of treated water for landscaping, construction activities, gardens, and other non-potable purposes.
Furthermore, the Water Board plans to develop a dedicated policy to supply treated water generated from its sewage treatment plants for industrial, construction, and landscaping requirements.
The proposed policy will include tanker registration, branding, online booking facilities, and a uniform pricing mechanism.
The MD said that increasing treated water utilisation by even two percent would significantly reduce the demand for drinking water. Consequently, the conserved potable water could be used during emergencies and periods of high demand.
Ashok Reddy also instructed officials to identify areas receiving uninterrupted water supply, connections with excessive consumption, and localities using more water than required. He directed them to monitor such areas closely to ensure equitable distribution across the city.
He stressed that every drop of water is valuable. Therefore, efficient management, modern technology, advance planning, and greater use of alternative water resources are essential to meet Hyderabad’s future water requirements.
Zero Tolerance on Contaminated Water Supply

The Managing Director made it clear that the Water Board will not tolerate negligence in cases involving contaminated water supply.
He directed officials to respond immediately to every complaint. If necessary, they should temporarily stop the water supply and arrange drinking water through tankers.
Officials must restore regular supply only after resolving the issue and confirming water quality through laboratory testing.
Ashok Reddy said maintaining safe drinking water quality will remain one of the Water Board’s highest priorities as Hyderabad continues to expand.
