Kolkata, July 7: West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has proposed including the life and contributions of Syama Prasad Mookerjee in the state’s school textbooks. He also suggested removing lessons related to the Singur movement from the syllabus.

He also highlighted Mookerjee’s tenure as Union Minister and as the youngest Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

Adhikari clarified that politicians do not decide the school syllabus. However, he said public representatives can place suggestions before the syllabus committee for consideration.

He also proposed removing lessons related to the Singur movement from school textbooks. According to him, the final decision rests with the syllabus committee, and he was only making a recommendation.

The Singur movement began after the West Bengal government acquired about 997 acres of farmland in Hooghly district between 2006 and 2008 for the Tata Motors Nano project. Farmers and local residents opposed the land acquisition.

At the time, Mamata Banerjee, then Leader of the Opposition, led protests, rallies, and hunger strikes demanding the return of farmers’ land. As protests intensified, Tata Motors shifted the Nano plant from Singur in October 2008.

The movement significantly boosted Mamata Banerjee’s political standing and contributed to the Trinamool Congress ending the Left Front’s 34 year rule in the 2011 Assembly elections. Lessons on the Singur movement were later included in the state syllabus.
