Hyderabad, July 14: Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday criticised the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), accusing the opposition party of politicising issues related to the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and recent developments surrounding it.
Speaking to the media, the Minister said there was no need to “play politics with blood packets” and alleged that the Kaleshwaram project had developed structural issues before the Congress government assumed office.
Ponnam Prabhakar said the State Government would act strictly in accordance with the recommendations of the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA).
He stated that if the NDSA’s final report certifies that water can be safely stored in the Kaleshwaram project, the government would do so immediately.
“We will follow the advice of engineers and technical experts. Whatever measures experts recommend to make the project fully functional again will be implemented,” he said.
The Minister alleged that the BRS was attempting to politicise issues relating to Medigadda and Kannepalli, adding that the government was focused on technical assessments rather than political arguments.
He accused the opposition of creating unnecessary public concern over the project.
Referring to weather conditions, Ponnam Prabhakar said experts and climate scientists have indicated the possibility of below-normal rainfall due to El Niño conditions.
He said the government is taking precautionary measures and advising farmers to consider alternative crops based on rainfall forecasts.
The Minister added that the State Government is fully prepared to respond to drought conditions and other natural disasters if required.
Ponnam Prabhakar urged political parties to work together on issues affecting the public.
He said that while political differences are natural, opposition parties should offer constructive suggestions and cooperate on matters related to farmers, irrigation and public welfare.
