Hyderabad, July 18: Hyderabad based Skyroot Aerospace on Saturday successfully launched Vikram 1, India’s first private orbital class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, marking a major milestone for the country’s commercial space sector.
The mission, named Mission Aagaman, lifted off at 12.05 pm after a planned 35 minute delay due to navigation checks. The launch was originally scheduled for 11.30 am.
The seven storey tall, four stage Vikram 1 rocket is expected to place multiple technology demonstration payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of 450 km with an inclination of 60 degrees after a flight of nearly 16 minutes.
Named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the pioneer of India’s space programme, Vikram 1 features an all carbon composite structure and is powered by propulsion systems developed in house by Skyroot Aerospace. The rocket also uses advanced 3D printed engines and high thrust solid fuel boosters.
The mission is carrying technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed, and Skyroot’s own SCOPE platform. It also carries Cosmic Bloom, a special artwork, along with a handwritten postcard from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The successful launch represents a significant step for India’s private space industry and strengthens the country’s growing capabilities in commercial satellite launches and indigenous space technology. (Maxim News)
