New Delhi/Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram has hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on “Dimagi Naxalism”, saying he is proud to be called a “Dimagi Naxal”.
Chidambaram responded to Modi’s remarks through a post on X on Saturday. “I am a proud Dimagi Naxal!” he wrote, without elaborating further.
The exchange followed Modi’s Independence Day address from the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister said India had made significant progress in tackling armed Naxalism.

Modi warned that a new form of Naxalism was emerging after the decline of armed Left Wing Extremism.
The Prime Minister alleged that “Dimagi Naxals” were attempting to create violence and unrest by misleading society. He called for such elements to be identified and isolated while urging young people to join the mainstream.
The remarks triggered a sharp political reaction from the Congress.
Congress leaders accused the Prime Minister of using provocative language against political opponents. They argued that the reference to “Dimagi Naxals” was an attempt to target critics and opponents through political rhetoric.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticised the Prime Minister’s remarks in a post on X.
Ramesh recalled the earlier use of the term “urban Naxals” and said the latest terminology reflected political desperation.
The remarks by Modi and the response from Chidambaram have sparked a fresh political debate over the use of the term “Naxal” to describe ideological opponents and critics.
The Congress has continued to challenge the government’s characterisation of dissent and political criticism, while the BJP has defended the Prime Minister’s warning about ideological extremism and threats to social stability.
