Hyderabad, August 28: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to protect Telangana’s interests in all interstate river water disputes.
He made the remarks during a review meeting on the irrigation department at MCR HRD Institute on Friday.
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, senior officials and legal experts attended the meeting.
The review covered pending disputes before the Supreme Court, Central Water Commission and river management boards.
Revanth Reddy asked officials to present Telangana’s case with strong legal and technical evidence.
He also directed officials to coordinate closely with lawyers and engineering experts.
The Chief Minister reviewed disputes with Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh during the meeting.
He stressed that Telangana should not compromise on its interests at any forum.
Thummidihatti project gets special focus
Officials also discussed the Thummidihatti project ahead of a CWC meeting in Delhi on September 1.
The meeting will involve officials from Telangana and Maharashtra.
Revanth Reddy asked officials to prepare complete details on the project.
These details include the proposed barrage height, construction aspects and Maharashtra’s objections.
He also sought technical data on the impact of constructing the barrage at 148 metres.
Officials must explain the project’s benefits, risks and possible alternatives, according to the review.
The Chief Minister also asked them to present earlier agreements and discussions before the central authorities.
Meanwhile, the government plans to discuss Krishna water issues with Andhra Pradesh at another CWC meeting on September 7.
The discussions will cover water use, releases from Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, and water allocation.
Telangana has also raised concerns over drinking water requirements and reservoir levels.
At a recent KRMB meeting, Telangana sought 112 TMC of water for drinking needs until August 2027.
The state also sought adequate storage in the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs.
Andhra Pradesh had proposed 47 TMC for its drinking water requirements.
However, Telangana opposed the proposal, and the meeting ended without a final decision.
The next KRMB meeting is scheduled for September 4, according to the source material.
The Chief Minister also reviewed pending water related cases before the Supreme Court.
He sought updates on the arguments made by Telangana and other states.
Furthermore, he asked officials to prepare stronger legal and technical material for future hearings.
The review also covered pending issues before the CWC, KRMB and GRMB.
Officials discussed Godavari water use and project approvals involving Maharashtra.
Revanth Reddy directed all departments to maintain coordination on interstate water matters.
The government also wants to safeguard drinking water supplies amid concerns over rainfall shortages.
Officials will therefore assess reservoir storage and future drinking water requirements.
