Hyderabad, Sept. 9: HYDRAA has intensified works at Kukatpally’s IDL Lake to ensure smooth Ganesh idol immersions. The agency is deepening the lake and filling it with water for the immersion arrangements.
HYDRAA is removing more than 20 feet of silt and waste from the lake near the main road. Officials said groundwater is also entering the deeper section after the waste was removed.
HYDRAA Prepares IDL Lake For Ganesh Immersion
The agency is taking steps to bring additional water into the lake. It is also working to prevent sewage water from entering the immersion area.
HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath inspected the lake and reviewed the arrangements. He directed officials to ensure sufficient water for immersion without affecting the lake restoration works.
Local residents, Ganesh festival committee representatives and local leaders also met the commissioner. Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao sought arrangements for smooth immersions.
Ranganath directed officials to bring water from other parts of the lake to the designated immersion area. HYDRAA is now carrying out the works on a priority basis.
Officials said large quantities of waste are emerging as excavation continues. The waste includes plastic, plaster of Paris, coconut fibre and other garbage.
The agency said sewage and waste had accumulated at the bottom for years. This had affected water seepage into the ground and contributed to pollution.
HYDRAA is removing the accumulated waste and transporting it through Ramky. The agency said it is taking measures to prevent environmental damage during the process.
Officials said plaster of Paris contains calcium sulphate hemihydrate. It can turn into gypsum when mixed with water and accumulate at the lake bottom.
HYDRAA is removing lakhs of tonnes of accumulated silt from the lake. Excavation work is continuing through the day and night.
The agency aims to complete the immersion arrangements before the Ganesh festival. After the immersions, it plans to complete restoration works across the 72 acre lake.
