Charminar | Hyderabad, Sept. 23: A portion of the white cement plaster on Hyderabad’s historic Charminar reportedly peeled off and fell following a spell of rain, raising fresh concerns over the maintenance of the 430-year-old monument.
The affected section faces Laad Bazaar, one of the busiest areas surrounding the iconic structure. The plaster reportedly fell after around 30 minutes of continuous rainfall.
Charminar security personnel responded soon after the incident was reported. They cleared the fallen debris and cordoned off the affected area to protect visitors.
The incident comes as Hyderabad experiences spells of heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department recorded 21.8 mm of rainfall in Hyderabad during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on September 23. It has forecast moderate rain in the city through September 26.
Charminar Faces Weather-Related Damage
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the impact of rain and water seepage on the historic monument.
A similar rain-related incident was reported in April 2025 when a section of stucco work on one of Charminar’s minarets collapsed. Archaeological Survey of India officials inspected the damaged section and planned restoration measures.
Built in 1591 by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, Charminar is among Hyderabad’s most prominent heritage landmarks.
The Archaeological Survey of India oversees conservation and maintenance of the monument. Regular monitoring becomes particularly important during periods of heavy rainfall because water seepage can affect plaster and decorative elements.
Officials are expected to assess the affected section and determine whether any restoration work is required. The latest incident has also highlighted the need for timely conservation measures to protect the historic structure.
