Nottingham/Hyderabad, Sept 26 (Maxim News): A new rapid genetic test developed in England could help doctors identify brain tumours much faster, with some results available in less than two hours during surgery.
The test was developed by researchers at the University of Nottingham and clinicians at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It uses rapid genetic sequencing to analyse tumour tissue collected during surgery or biopsy.
The technology uses nanopore sequencing and a software platform called ROBIN, which provides real-time analysis of tumour DNA. The approach can identify the molecular characteristics of a tumour while an operation is still underway.
Brain Tumour Diagnosis Possible Within Two Hours
Researchers tested the ROBIN approach on 50 prospective brain tumour cases. The study found that diagnostic results could be generated in under two hours, while more comprehensive molecular profiling could be completed within 24 hours.
The test examines DNA changes and methylation patterns that help classify different types of brain tumours. This is important because brain tumours include many different types, and their molecular characteristics can influence treatment decisions.
The rapid results can also help surgeons make decisions during an operation. According to Nottingham University Hospitals, the sequencing process in a recent case took around 20 minutes, with results provided to the surgical team in less than two hours.
Traditional testing can take several weeks. The new approach could therefore reduce the waiting period for patients and help doctors begin treatment planning sooner.
The technology is now being piloted across specialist centres in England following successful work in Nottingham and Birmingham. Researchers say the approach could eventually support faster and more personalised brain tumour diagnosis across the NHS.
