Rahul Gandhi Says President Seeks Evidence On ‘Vote Chori’ Claims

Rahul Gandhi  | New Delhi, Oct. 10: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said President Droupadi Murmu asked the opposition delegation to submit evidence supporting its allegations of “vote chori” after a meeting at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The delegation of INDIA bloc MPs met the President and submitted a memorandum alleging electoral irregularities. The opposition also raised concerns about Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanded his resignation.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were among those who attended the meeting. Other representatives included Supriya Sule, M. A. Baby, Manoj Kumar Jha, D. Raja, Rajeev Rai and Thirumaavalavan Tholkappiyan.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CEC Gyanesh Kumar were conspiring to undermine Indian democracy. These were allegations made by the opposition delegation.

Gandhi said the President had asked the leaders to provide evidence supporting their claims. He added that the delegation would submit the material when she was available.

He described the meeting as satisfactory and said the President had neither rejected nor questioned the delegation’s submissions.

Gandhi also announced that the opposition planned to approach the Supreme Court on Monday with a memorandum addressed to the Chief Justice of India.

Kharge said the President had listened patiently to the delegation. He said the leaders discussed alleged electoral irregularities, the Election Commission’s functioning and the role of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The Congress president also demanded that electronic voting machines be set aside and elections be conducted using ballot papers.

Banerjee said the President had indicated that she would examine the memorandum and had asked the delegation to provide evidence. She stressed the need to protect democracy and uphold the Constitution.

.The meeting followed several days of opposition protests over the Election Commission, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the electoral process
