JNU Sexual Harassment Case | New Delhi, Oct. 12: Delhi Police have registered an FIR naming Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a sexual harassment case linked to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The FIR was filed following a complaint by the university’s Chief Security Officer.
According to officials, Vasant Kunj North police station registered the FIR on October 11 under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are investigating the matter, and further details are awaited.
Media reports said at least 11 female students filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May. They alleged that he invited students to his campus residence for meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them.
Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in classrooms. The complaints were reportedly examined during an inquiry before the university dismissed him from his teaching position.
JNU Sexual Harassment Case | BJP Questions Congress Over Allegations Against Akoijam
On Sunday, BJP leaders questioned the Congress leadership over its response to the allegations. They specifically asked why Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had not publicly addressed the matter.

At a press conference, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said JNU had dismissed Akoijam following allegations of sexual misconduct. She said 11 students had filed complaints in 2024 and that the university had constituted an Internal Committee under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
Swaraj also questioned Rahul Gandhi’s earlier “Smash the Patriarchy” remark. She accused the Congress of failing to ensure accountability and criticised its senior leaders for remaining silent on the allegations.
She named Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi while questioning the party’s response. Swaraj argued that women’s respect should be reflected in party policies and accountability, rather than political slogans.
The allegations remain under investigation by Delhi Police.
