1000 chickens die in Suryapet poultry farms

Suryapet, February 3: Around 1,000 chickens died in a poultry farm in Suryapet on Tuesday.

District officials inspected the farm and sent the samples to Pune laboratory for testing if bird flu was the reason.

The Suryapet district veterinary and animal husbandry officer Venu Manohar said that no bird flu has been identified from the preliminary investigation, however, the samples have been sent for testing.

He also said that the death of chickens is common due to various causes such as difference in temperature, suffocation or overcrowding.

Chickens reasons of death:

Special teams have been formed to inspect the poultry farms in the district and educate the poultry farmers on the possible reasons of death.

So far, no case of bird flu has been reported in Telangana. Although, several incidents related to poultry deaths had been reported, it was confirmed that it was not due to bird flu.

Farmers reported the deaths at poultry farms at Kasarabad, Kesaram, Dasaigudem, Tirumalagiri, Namavaram and Durajpalli.

Officials said they received information about the poultry deaths at three places and sent the teams immediately to collect the samples.

Farmers, however, have been reporting poultry deaths for the last one week in the district.

“Poultry deaths are common due to various reasons. It could happen due to variation in temperatures, suffocation or overcrowding.

Generally, we see 2-3 per cent deaths taking place,” Venu Manohar said. All the deaths that have been reported are of chicks which are less than one-month-old.

Chicken examination:

“From preliminary examination, we are of the opinion that there is no bird flu. But, we sent the samples for testing to Pune lab,” district veterinary and animal husbandry officer Venu Manohar Rao said to TOI on Tuesday.
