Hyderabad, Sept.1 (Maxim News): Prof. K. C. James Raju, Centre for Advanced Studies in Electronics Science & Technology (CASEST), School of Physics, University of Hyderabad has been selected for the prestigious Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship, from the Indian Academy of Engineering.
Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST) had launched the INAE-SERB, DST Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship in the year 2017 to recognize, encourage and support translational research by Individuals working in engineering in public funded institutions.
The duration of the fellowship will be initially for three years, extendable by two more years. Prof. Raju will be receiving a research grant of Rs. 15.00 lakh per annum for pursuing research and innovation. A monthly fellowship amount to the tune of Rs. 25,000 per month is also made available, alongside an Overhead of Rs.1.00 lakh per annum to the host institution.
Prof Raju obtained his Ph.D from IIT, Madras, winning the “Best Thesis” Award in the process. As a part of his Ph.D, he developed Microwave Dielectric Resonators for DRDO. He joined the University in 1996, becoming the first faculty of the Electronics Program of the School of Physics. The Electronics Program became CASEST in 2014 under the School of Physics.
Prof Raju has worked in the interface between Solid State Physics and Microwave Electronics, and the Electronics Centre in the Physics School facilitated the interdisciplinary approach – his work required involvement of students from both Physics and Electronics – that eventually produced the work that brought this recognition. It is the flexibility of our University system that facilitated it.
After joining UoH, he extended his work into thin films by collaborating with his colleagues. He was working on Electronic Materials like Ferroelectrics, Piezoelectrics, Magnetoelectrics and Low loss Dielectrics. He set up a detailed characterization facility to study materials, phenomena and devices in the microwave frequency range which is being widely used by many investigators. Using the software available at the Centre and using the facilities at the Clean Room established in Centre For Nanotechnology, he fabricates Electric field tunable microwave devices using the lab grown materials. These find application in the next-generation mobile communications as well as in the strategic sector. Prof Raju’s work has been supported by DST, DRDO, ISRO, DAE and University programmes like UPE, Plan Grants, CAS, NRC and the Institution of Eminence project.
Prof Raju has supervised 13 Ph.D students and 25 M.Tech students. He has published more than 150 papers in relevant International journals and successfully completed about 15 funded research projects. He has to his credit granted patent one and decisions on 3 Patent applications are pending.
In his free time he explores fields as diverse as Theology and History. (Maxim News)
