Nupur Sharma should be forgiven as per Islam, says Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing controversy and nationwide protests over alleged objectionable remarks on Prophet Mohammad, Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind president Suhaib Qasmi on Sunday said that suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma should be forgiven as per Islam.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Qasmi said that the organisation of Muslim scholars disagreed with the nationwide protests in wake of her remarks, saying “we are not going to take the law into our hands.”

“Islam says Nupur Sharma should be forgiven. We disagree with the protest that started across the country after Friday prayers against Nupur Sharma and her derogatory remarks,” Qasmi said.

Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind also welcomed the decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to suspend Sharma. “We are welcoming the decision of the law because India is the law of the land and we are not going to take the law into our hands. The law does not allow to come on the road and break the rule,” he told reporters in the national capital.

The organization has also decided to issue a ‘fatwa’ urging people not to support any kind of violence in connection with Sharma and her remarks on the Prophet.

“The fatwa will come against Asaduddin Owaisi and Mohammad Madani,” the Jamaat said.

It also appealed to the government to conduct a probe against several Muslim organizations and their funding, adding that it will not allow other Muslim organizations to incite violence.

A row has been erupted after the alleged controversial remarks against the Prophet by Sharma, who was later suspended from the party’s primary membership.

Various parts of the country witnessed protests and incidents of violence after Sharma commented on the prophet’s private life during a heated TV debate that Muslims found insulting. In Jharkhand’s Ranchi, two people died during the violent protest.

Many Muslim-majority countries have also condemned India over Sharma’s inflammatory remarks.
