GDP will increase two times if women economically engaged – Dr. Sharada

Hyderabad: Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) today organized a press conference in connection with the 12th Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity to be held tomorrow at 6:30 pm at DDE Auditorium, MANUU campus.

The Population First (PF) in collaboration with Instructional Media Centre and Centre for Women Studies, MANUU is organizing these awards. The event is also supported by UNFPA, Norwegian Embassy New Delhi.

Dr. Sharada A.L, Director, PF while addressing the press conference said women constitute 50% of the population and if we really want to progress we have to take them with us. If women are also engaged economically then GDP will increase two times; so we cannot really ignore women. We are looking forward to a world that is more gender sensitive, equitable and that is a dream of every individual also to live in a better world, she remarked. Talking about Laadly awards she said there are 75 winners in 13 languages, coming from all over the country and life time achievement award is being given to Smt. Sharada Srinivasna, a pioneer in radio communication.

Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor in his address said MANUU is trying to provide quality education at all levels and is on its way to implement the National Education Policy. The university has started programmes in fashion designing, interior designing and diplomas in Russian and French languages. Acquiring more languages will greatly benefit the students, he said. Our Urdu background students are doing all courses from technology to humanities, and social sciences, he added. The university will not tolerate any gender-based discrimination, he stressed.

Ms. Dolly Thakur, Veteran Theatre Personality and National Coordinator, Laadly Media Awards while appreciating MANUU for taking steps towards women education said that many hurdles have been overcome but still many more to cross. She talked about the need to instill energy into young generation. She also advised women to open up their minds.

Prof. Shahida, Director, Centre for Women Studies, MANUU also addressed the press conference and gave details about MoU signed by MANUU and PF.

Later, media persons asked several questions about MANUU, Population Funds, Laadli Media Awards which were answered by the concerned authorities.

Prof. Mohammad Fariyad, Head, Department of MCJ & PRO I/c convened the programme. Mr. Rizwan Ahamd, Director, IMC also shared the dais.
