Income Tax Audit ITR deadline | New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the income tax audit and Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadlines for certain taxpayers for Assessment Year 2026-27.
The tax audit report deadline has been extended from September 30 to October 21, 2026. The ITR filing deadline for taxpayers covered by the audit requirement has been extended from October 31 to November 21, 2026.
The extension provides additional time for taxpayers and chartered accountants to complete audits, reconciliations and related compliance requirements.
ITR deadline | Who Will Benefit From the Extension?
The revised ITR deadline mainly applies to taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act or other applicable laws.
The extension covers companies, non-company assessees whose accounts require an audit, working partners of audited firms and trusts whose accounts are required to be audited.
However, cases involving transfer pricing will not get the revised November 21 deadline. The ITR deadline for transfer pricing cases remains November 30, 2026, while the deadline for Form 3CEB remains October 31, 2026.

The CBDT said the extension applies to the taxpayers specified under the relevant provisions of Section 139 of the Income-tax Act.
Chartered Accountants to Upload Audit Reports
Taxpayers who are required to undergo an income tax audit must have their Chartered Accountant complete and upload the applicable audit report through the income tax e-filing portal.
After the CA uploads and verifies the report, the taxpayer must accept it and complete the required e-verification. Taxpayers can check the status through the Worklist section of the e-filing portal.
The extension is expected to provide relief to tax professionals and businesses that are still completing audits and reconciling financial data.
Chartered accountants cited by ET Wealth also pointed to technical issues reported on the income tax e-filing and ICAI UDIN portals as one of the difficulties faced during the compliance process.
Taxpayers Advised Not to Wait Until the Last Date

Tax professionals have advised eligible taxpayers to use the additional time to complete their filings rather than waiting until the revised deadlines.
Where tax liability has already been determined, taxpayers may need to pay the applicable tax promptly because interest provisions can continue to apply depending on the circumstances.
The extension also means that an eligible taxpayer filing the ITR by November 21, 2026 will be treated as having filed within the extended deadline. This can be relevant for maintaining eligibility to carry forward certain business and capital losses and claim deductions that depend on timely filing.
Taxpayers should therefore verify whether they fall under the audit category and check the applicable deadline before filing.
