Aban Ahmed | Lucknow / Hyderabad, August 5: Aban Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed, died in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh‘s Jhansi district on Thursday. His friend also lost his life in the crash, while three others sustained serious injuries.
According to police, the accident occurred on the Jhansi Kanpur National Highway under the Poonch police station limits. Aban was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi Jail to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is lodged there.
Police said the group was travelling in a Hyundai Creta SUV when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. Preliminary findings suggest the driver tried to avoid an animal that suddenly came onto the road. The speeding vehicle then rammed into the road divider, causing extensive damage.
Aban Ahmed and his friend Sonu suffered critical injuries and were declared dead by doctors. The three other occupants were shifted to a government medical college hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Aban Ahmed | Police Probe Cause of Accident
Senior police officials said the exact cause of the crash is under investigation. Preliminary inquiries indicate that overspeeding may have contributed to the accident.
The victims were rushed to the hospital by local residents and police personnel after authorities received information about the crash. The bodies of Aban and Sonu have been sent for postmortem examination.
Aban was the youngest son of Atiq Ahmed, the former MP and gangster who was shot dead along with his brother Ashraf Ahmed in Prayagraj in April 2023 while in police custody.
The Ahmed family has remained in the spotlight due to multiple criminal cases. Aban’s brother Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in 2023, while Ali Ahmed is currently lodged in Jhansi Jail in connection with several criminal cases. Another brother, Umar Ahmed, is in Lucknow Jail.
Unlike some of his brothers, Aban was not known to be actively involved in criminal cases and was pursuing his studies, according to police sources.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal crash.
