Adilabad, June 15: Police in Adilabad busted an alleged interstate spurious cotton seeds racket and arrested five persons involved in the illegal trade. Officials seized 792 packets of suspected fake cotton seeds worth about Rs. 20 lakh along with unauthorised pesticides, packing equipment, label printing machines, packing materials and a car.
Addressing the media, Akhil Mahajan said the accused were identified as Sunil Kumar from Hyderabad, Rathod Pandit from Maharashtra, Girish Patel from Gujarat and Eshwar from Echoda. Police said four more accused remain absconding.
According to investigators, the network allegedly operated across states and targeted farmers through illegal distribution channels.
During questioning, police said Sunil Kumar allegedly admitted to being part of the operation and claimed the group was formed for financial gain. Investigators stated that seeds were procured through associates and distributed using local contacts.
Police alleged that the accused worked through a network involving traders and local intermediaries to market the seeds. Authorities are continuing efforts to trace the remaining suspects.
Officials said the investigation will focus on identifying supply chains, distribution networks and the possible impact on farmers.
Senior police officers, including officials from Adilabad district police and investigation teams, participated in the operation.
