Hyderabad, July 6 (Maxim News): AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday urged the Telangana government to immediately issue Permanent Residence Certificates (PRCs), warning that many poor residents could lose their names from the electoral rolls due to the lack of accepted identity documents.
Addressing the media, Owaisi said many economically weaker sections in Telangana do not possess the documents currently accepted for voter verification. Therefore, he argued that issuing PRCs would help protect their voting rights.
Owaisi questioned why the Telangana government had not introduced Permanent Residence Certificates despite the issue affecting a large number of people.
“If the ruling party does not understand that many poor people in Telangana lack these documents, then it is completely disconnected from reality,” he said.
He also asked why the state’s two BJP MPs, who are Union Ministers, had not approached the Election Commission of India to seek acceptance of documents such as PAN cards, driving licences, and food security cards for voter verification.
Owaisi demanded that the Congress government immediately issue PRCs, saying the certificates would provide a practical solution to the problem. He pointed out that Karnataka, where Congress is also in power, issues Permanent Residence Certificates and questioned why Telangana could not adopt a similar policy.
The AIMIM chief further warned the Congress government against responding only after the final electoral rolls are published.
“If there is a conspiracy, then find a solution now instead of talking about it later,” he said, adding that issuing PRCs would address the concerns raised over voter verification.
At the same time, Owaisi criticised the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), saying the principal Opposition should also take up the matter with the Election Commission. He noted that the BRS governed Telangana for ten years and questioned why it had not raised concerns over the limited list of acceptable documents.
Owaisi urged both the Telangana government and opposition parties to act before eligible voters, particularly poor residents, face the risk of exclusion from the voter list. (Maxim News)
