Delhi, June 14: In a significant move aimed at accelerating India’s clean mobility transition, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that rules allowing the use of 100 percent ethanol as a legal vehicle fuel have been approved.
The minister said he signed the required rules and documents, enabling the commercial deployment and official certification of pure ethanol fuel, commonly referred to as E100, in India’s transport sector.
The decision marks another step in the government’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and expand the use of alternative and cleaner fuels.
E100 Fuel Push Targets Lower Oil Dependence
Officials believe the introduction of E100 fuel can support India’s long term energy and environmental goals while encouraging greater use of domestically produced biofuels.
India has already been expanding ethanol use through blended fuel programmes and is moving toward wider availability of petrol blended with 20 percent ethanol across the country.
The latest approval is expected to create opportunities for vehicle manufacturers, fuel suppliers and the biofuel sector as the transition toward cleaner transport technologies continues.
Authorities are expected to issue further implementation details regarding certification, fuel availability and vehicle compatibility.
