Hyderabad, May 12 (Maxim News): Chicken prices in Telangana have increased sharply over the past ten days, causing concern among non vegetarian consumers across the state.
Retail chicken prices in Hyderabad have risen by nearly Rs 100 per kilogram within a week. Until recently, skinless chicken was selling at around Rs 240 per kg in the city. However, prices in several areas have now climbed to between Rs 350 and Rs 370 per kg.
At poultry farms, live chicken prices increased to around Rs 170 to Rs 180 per kg. Meanwhile, egg prices also witnessed a rise, with a dozen eggs currently selling between Rs 72 and Rs 75.
Traders and consumers say the sudden spike in prices has significantly affected household budgets, especially among regular meat consumers.
Summer Heat Hits Poultry Sector
Poultry farm owners said the intense summer heat and continuous heatwave conditions are severely affecting poultry production across Telangana.
According to poultry operators, chickens in farms are facing extreme stress due to high temperatures and hot winds. They said many birds are consuming less feed, while several others are dying because they are unable to withstand the heat conditions.
As a result, poultry production has declined at a time when demand remains high. Traders stated that reduced supply is one of the main reasons behind the sharp rise in chicken prices.
They also pointed out that transportation costs have increased considerably in recent weeks, further adding pressure on the poultry business. Due to higher operational costs, sellers say they have no option but to increase retail prices.
Market analysts believe chicken prices may continue to rise if the current weather conditions persist. Some traders estimate that chicken prices could cross the Rs 400 per kg mark in the coming days if supply shortages worsen.
Meanwhile, many consumers are reportedly shifting towards fish and other alternatives as soaring chicken prices continue to impact purchasing decisions across the state. (Maxim News)
