Hyderabad: The Delhi Police Crime Branch has summoned Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka for questioning over a protest at Jantar Mantar. The summons came a day after they were released from judicial custody.
The two leaders have been asked to appear at the Crime Branch office in Rajouri Garden on Thursday. The case relates to their alleged entry into the Jantar Mantar area, which had been denotified as a designated protest site.
A Special Executive Magistrate’s court released Das and Ranka after accepting their personal and surety bonds. They furnished bonds of ₹50,000 each and submitted written undertakings to maintain peace and abide by the law.
CJP Leaders Asked to Follow Court Conditions
The court directed both leaders to appear on every hearing date and comply with the conditions in their bonds and undertakings. They also agreed not to call for protests at Jantar Mantar until the site is legally notified for such activities.
Delhi Police had sought an extension of their judicial custody, citing concerns over a possible breach of peace and law and order. Police also raised questions about alleged differences between their statements before the court and subsequent remarks to the media.
The two leaders were detained following a protest on October 13. According to police, CJP members entered the denotified site through private premises and unfurled the national flag during a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest also involved demands related to electoral roll revisions.
Police registered two cases connected to the incident. Both cases have since been transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation. The allegations against the leaders have not been established in court.
The court has directed the investigating officer to submit a report verifying the sureties at the next hearing. The matter is scheduled for further proceedings on October 23 at 3 pm, with Das, Ranka and their sureties directed to remain present.
