Pudukkottai, June 7: Senior DMK leader R.S. Bharathi on Sunday ruled out any alliance with Congress in the upcoming local body elections and said the party has no plans to revive political ties with its former ally.
Speaking to reporters in Pudukkottai, Bharathi said the DMK would not be part of any alliance that includes Congress and asserted that party cadres would not support any future reconciliation.
Bharathi challenged opposition parties to prove their strength in the forthcoming local body elections. He urged authorities to conduct the polls by January and said electoral performance at the grassroots level would reflect the true public mood.
He also responded to criticism from Congress leader Manickam Tagore regarding the DMK’s performance and alliance issues. Bharathi suggested that Congress leaders should first assess their own political position before commenting on others.
The DMK leader said there are no political ties between the two parties at present. He maintained that even if party leadership considered a different approach in the future, grassroots workers would not accept Congress back into the alliance.
Bharathi also reiterated that the DMK remains committed to its ideological stand and ruled out any possibility of an alliance with the BJP.
Commenting on political defections, he criticised leaders who frequently switch parties for positions and said such moves rarely provide long term political stability.
He also downplayed the recent electoral gains of actor turned politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Bharathi argued that the party’s performance did not necessarily reflect broad based support and claimed that social media campaigns played a major role in influencing voters.
The remarks come amid growing political activity in Tamil Nadu as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of future local body and Assembly elections.
