Hyderabad: The Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully tested the indigenous TAZRA glide weapon system off the Odisha coast in a major boost to India’s defence capabilities.
The Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation system, known as TAZRA, is a glide bomb developed with indigenous technology. Officials said the weapon system is designed to strike targets with high precision using conventional warheads.
The test was jointly conducted by DRDO and the Indian Air Force. According to the Union Defence Ministry, the successful trial marks an important milestone in the development of indigenous smart weapon systems.
Officials stated that the glide weapon system was developed at comparatively low cost while ensuring high operational efficiency. The system was designed by Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad with support from several other DRDO laboratories.
TAZRA glide weapon improves strike precision
Unlike conventional free fall bombs, glide weapons use aerodynamic mechanisms to travel toward targets after release. Once launched from an aircraft, the TAZRA system glides through the air and extends strike range before hitting the intended target.
Defence experts said the technology acts as a modular range extension kit for unguided bombs. The system converts standard bombs into precision guided glide weapons capable of engaging targets from safer distances.
Officials added that the successful test demonstrated the weapon’s guidance, navigation, and control capabilities under operational conditions. The glide mechanism allows the bomb to travel a considerable distance after release while maintaining target accuracy.
The Defence Ministry described TAZRA as the first indigenously developed glide weapon system of its category. The development is expected to strengthen India’s self reliance efforts in advanced defence technologies and smart munitions.
The successful trial also highlights the growing contribution of Hyderabad based defence research institutions in strategic weapon development programmes. DRDO officials said further evaluation and integration activities would continue in the coming months.
