Delhi/Hyderabad, June 8 (Maxim News): The Election Commission has issued key instructions to the state machinery on the Special Comprehensive Revision (SCR) of the Electoral Roll. It has been stated that if any suspected foreigners are identified during the SCR process, such cases should be reported to the relevant authority working under the Citizenship Act, 1955.
It has been clarified that the Assistant EROs should exercise the powers of EROs independently in this regard. Similarly, if the enumeration papers of any person are not returned, the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) should inquire with the local voters and identify the reasons for this (such as unavailability, change of residence, death, double entry) and note them. To this end, the EC issued detailed key guidelines to the state chief electoral officers on the procedures to be followed during the SCR.
Last year, while the EC was preparing for a special comprehensive revision of the voters’ list in Bihar, election officials reported that field staff had identified several people from Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. However, in the end, the election officials did not disclose any statistics or evidence regarding such people who were not eligible to be in the voters’ list. The opposition is criticizing the claim that such an argument is part of the EC’s efforts to carry out the SIR process to target voters who are not in favor of the BJP and its allies. It is known that the EC started the third phase of SIR in 16 states and 3 UTs, including AP and Telangana, on 14th of last month. The process related to 36.73 crore voters was carried out in phases from May 30. (Maxim News)
