Hyderabad, July 31: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s remarks questioning the ability of engineering graduates to write a job application have sparked criticism from engineering students and academic circles across Telangana, with many urging the government to address systemic issues in higher education instead of making generalised comments.
Speaking during an interaction with participants of the Finland and Germany Teacher Exposure Visit and Educational Exchange Programme, Revanth Reddy said that nearly 1.10 lakh engineering students graduate every year, but questioned their employability.
“Give them a blank sheet of paper and ask them to write a job application. This is a criminal waste,” the Chief Minister said.
The remarks drew sharp reactions from students, who argued that the government should focus on improving engineering education rather than criticising graduates.
Durga Prasad, a third year BTech Computer Science student at JNTU Hyderabad, said he had personally submitted 10 to 15 representations regarding fee reimbursement delays and other student issues but had not received any response.
“Instead of making such statements, the Chief Minister should focus on resolving problems affecting engineering education,” he said.
J Dileep, a Mechanical Engineering research scholar at JNTU Hyderabad, said the inability of one individual should not be used to judge all engineering students.
He urged the government to release a white paper identifying institutions producing under skilled graduates and take corrective measures to improve the quality of engineering education.
Dileep also questioned whether the Chief Minister personally drafted all his RTI applications and legal petitions during his time in the Opposition.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) State General Secretary Macharla Ramabu also criticised the remarks. He challenged the Chief Minister to fill out his own election affidavit without assistance or write the full forms of “MLA” and “CM.”
Ramabu noted that Hyderabad has become India’s second largest IT export hub and a leading startup destination, driven largely by engineering graduates from Telangana’s colleges. He urged the Chief Minister to avoid making sweeping remarks about students.
Engineering professors also expressed concern over the comments, pointing out that many graduates receive multiple job offers before completing their degree programmes, reflecting the quality and employability of a significant section of engineering students.
