Gambhira Bridge Collapse: 3 Dead as Vehicles Plunge into Mahisagar River

Gambhira bridge collapse | Vadodara, July 9: A bridge in Gujarat’s Anand district collapsed on Wednesday. The incident occurred on the Mahisagar river. At least three people died. Many more are feared trapped. Several vehicles fell into the river. Rescue operations are underway.

Four people have been rescued so far. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. The Gambhira bridge collapsed around 7:30 am.

Five vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar River, killing two people and severing a crucial transportation link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra.

The incident occurred without warning, hurling two trucks, a pickup van, and another vehicles into the swollen river below. Within minutes, chaos unfolded as villagers rushed to the scene, followed closely by police and rescue teams. Three people were pulled from the wreckage alive, while two were confirmed dead.

Five to six vehicles fell into the Mahisagar river after a slab of the Gambhira bridge, located on the river which connects central Gujarat and Saurashtra regions of the state, collapsed, Gujarat’s Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said.

“Three persons have died and five others have been rescued,” Patel told mediapersons.

Anand MP Mitesh Patel said three bodies have been recovered and four persons rescued so far. “Rescue operations are still underway. They are being carried out by district officials of both Vadodara and Anand districts,” he said.

He said the bridge was constructed in 1985, and its maintenance was carried out periodically as and when required.

“The exact reason behind the incident will be probed,” the minister said.

This bridge had long been in a state of dangerous disrepair. Locals had repeatedly sounded the alarm over its crumbling condition and pleaded for urgent repairs or a new structure—but their warnings went unheeded.
