Hyderabad: Around 4,500 tonnes of waste was generated during Ganesh immersion processions across Greater Hyderabad this year, around 1,300 tonnes more than last year, according to civic authorities.
The waste included garlands, puja material, decorative items, coloured paper, broken coconuts and other discarded material. More than 6,000 sanitation workers were deployed to clear waste from roads and immersion points.
GHMC Deploys Teams to Clear Immersion Waste
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) deployed 136 Ganesh Action Teams and around 6,000 sanitation workers to manage waste generated during the processions.
Another 770 workers were deployed at immersion points to clear waste and maintain sanitation.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) also deployed floating trash collectors and an amphibious excavator to remove waste from Hussainsagar.
In the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) limits, teams were deployed for sanitation, waste management and other civic services during the immersion period.
Separate arrangements were also made to collect flower waste at designated immersion points.
Over the past 11 days, around 6,000 kg of flower waste was collected and segregated. The waste was dried and processed into products such as incense sticks, dhoops and diyas.
CMC officials said waste management operations and separate flower-waste collection would continue at immersion points as the remaining Ganesh idols are immersed.
