Hyderabad, July 2: A gang allegedly supplying ganja across India through Speed Post and courier services has been busted, with one accused arrested during a joint operation by H New officials and Gudimalkapur police, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said on Thursday.
Addressing the media, Sajjanar said the arrested accused, identified as Satyam Mishra from Jharkhand, allegedly operated a network that supplied cannabis to customers in multiple states through postal and courier services.
Gang Supplying Ganja Through Speed Post
According to the police, Mishra allegedly cultivated and procured ganja along with four associates, identified as Rahul Jai, Sachin Mishra and Santosh, who are currently absconding. The network reportedly supplied cannabis to 21 states, including Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Karnataka.
Police said the accused allegedly booked parcels through post offices in Jharkhand by making false declarations about the contents. Orders were reportedly received through WhatsApp and other social media platforms, while payments were collected using UPI transactions.
Investigators said the gang allegedly received between 80 and 100 orders daily and dispatched 8 to 10 parcels containing 50 to 250 grams of ganja each. The packets were reportedly sold for prices ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 8,000.
Police estimated the syndicate generated nearly Rs 1 lakh in daily revenue, with a monthly turnover of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh and an annual turnover of around Rs 4 crore to Rs 5 crore. The accused allegedly purchased gold and luxury vehicles using the proceeds and routed money through multiple bank accounts and UPI IDs.
Sajjanar said the investigation revealed that inadequate screening of Speed Post parcels transported by rail and air had facilitated the operation. He said Hyderabad Police would write to the Central authorities seeking mandatory scanning of postal parcels.
The Commissioner added that two suspicious parcels delivered to Hyderabad had arrived by air. He also said instructions would be issued to courier companies in the city to scan every parcel before delivery.
Sajjanar appealed to the public to immediately inform the police if they receive any suspicious parcels. The investigation is continuing to trace the remaining accused.
