Hyderabad: Garbage dumping at vulnerable locations across Hyderabad could soon trigger automated warnings, with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) planning to install CCTV cameras and IoT-based public address systems at 2,500 identified Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs), sweeping points and other hotspots.
The initiative aims to eliminate GVPs through continuous surveillance, real-time detection and immediate warnings against illegal dumping.
Cameras will be installed at strategic locations to monitor garbage points and their approaches. The system will also be designed to avoid unnecessary surveillance of private premises.
The proposed IoT-based system will detect waste dumping in real time and automatically issue audio and visual warnings to violators. It will also generate video evidence and operate without requiring manual intervention from the control room.
Warnings will primarily be issued in Telugu and Urdu, with Hindi and English used as secondary languages. The messages will urge citizens not to dump waste at the location and direct them to designated collection points and door-to-door waste collection services.
GHMC to use real-time alerts for waste dumping violations
Photographs, video clips and alerts generated by the surveillance system will be sent to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). This will allow civic officials to monitor violations and initiate enforcement action, including penalties or challans under applicable municipal bye-laws.
The initiative is part of GHMC’s ongoing Swachh Hyderabad campaign. The drive includes measures such as barricading vulnerable locations, creating wall art and converting garbage vulnerable points into parks.
The project is also aligned with the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, which aims to make cities garbage-free through improved waste management and sustained citizen participation.
Technology-enabled surveillance and real-time public messaging are among the measures being used to encourage behavioural change and improve civic participation.
GHMC has invited a Request for Proposal (RFP) to select an agency for procuring, installing, integrating, operating and maintaining the CCTV and IoT-based systems at the 2,500 identified locations.
The move is expected to strengthen real-time monitoring of waste dumping and help GHMC take quicker action against repeated violations across the city.
