HMWSSB to Fine Rs 5,000 for Illegal Motors, Launches New App
Hyderabad: To deal with water supply problems this summer, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is launching a new mobile app and starting a citywide inspection drive. The aim is to stop the use of illegal water motors and other activities that waste drinking water.
This decision was made during a review meeting held by HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy along with other senior officials on Wednesday, April 9.

New App to Catch Water Violations
The Water Board’s new app will help officials catch and fine people who break the rules. The app will be given to all staff, from linemen to general managers, within two days.
Using the app, officials can take geotagged photos of illegal motors. Once a violation is reported, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be automatically added to the consumer’s water bill for the next month.
The app will also track other violations like:
- Washing cars and floors with drinking water
- Water tank overflows
- Using drinking water for gardening or construction work
In the next phase, the app will be opened to the public, so citizens can also report misuse of water in their areas.
Four-Phase Drive to Stop Illegal Motors
The Water Board is also starting a four-phase inspection drive called ‘Motor-Free Top Water’ from April 15. It will continue throughout the summer.
- Phase 1: Linemen will check each water connection when the valves are opened to see if illegal motors are being used and to measure water pressure.
- Phase 2: Section managers will inspect the same connections the next day. If they find an illegal motor, the consumer will be fined Rs 5,000, the motor will be seized, and their connection number (CAN) will be blacklisted.
- Phase 3: General managers will conduct random checks to make sure the lines are clear. If everything is in order, they will submit reports to senior officers.
- Phase 4: Senior officers, including the Managing Director, will carry out surprise inspections based on earlier reports. Fines and seizures will continue wherever violations are found.
The Water Board has also warned its staff that anyone submitting false or incomplete reports will face strict disciplinary action, including a performance review and a formal misconduct memo (MOMO).
