Hyderabad Techie Ends Life After 6 Months of Marriage Over Dowry Harassment

Hyderabad, June 20 (Maxim News): In a tragic incident highlighting the persistent menace of dowry harassment, a 27-year-old software engineer, Sushma, took her own life just six months after marriage. She reportedly ended her life by jumping into Durgam Cheruvu (Durgam Pond) near Hitech City, unable to bear the alleged mental torture from her in-laws demanding additional dowry.

Harassment Began Soon After the Wedding

Sushma, daughter of Anjaiah and Sushila of Addagutta, East Marredpally, married Amruth, a fellow software engineer from Neredmet, on January 31, 2025. At the time of marriage, Sushma’s family had provided ₹5 lakh in cash, 6 tolas of gold, and a Royal Enfield bike as dowry.

However, within weeks, Sushma allegedly faced harassment from her husband, his aunt, uncle, and brother-in-law, who demanded further dowry.

Events Leading to the Tragedy

Sushma, who had recently recovered from an illness, went with her father to collect a laptop from her in-laws’ house. There, she was reportedly subjected to insults and harsh words, not only towards herself but also directed at her father over dowry matters. Deeply distressed, she left for work on Wednesday afternoon, but never returned.

Her father, worried after failing to contact her, approached Madhapur police late at night. Early Thursday morning, locals alerted police about a woman’s body in Durgam Cheruvu, which was later identified as Sushma’s.
