Ice Cream Economy Fuels Jobs And MSME Growth

  • Local sourcing drives Ice Cream industry expansion in Andhra Pradesh
  • Dumont’s Gudavalli hub becomes model for MSME-led job creation

Gudavalli/Hyderabad, Nov 13 (Maxim News): The quiet village of Gudavalli near Vijayawada is emerging as a hub of community-powered manufacturing through a homegrown Ice Cream brand that is reshaping the regional economy. Dumont, which started as a small plant in Gunadala in 1999, has grown into a multi-country operation with nearly 60 outlets across India and the USA. Its journey shows how indulgence can merge with impact to create sustainable, inclusive growth.

Over the past two decades, Dumont has expanded carefully, avoiding quick scale-ups. The company follows a model of slow, steady progress centered on local development. Its co-founder, Bhaskar Inampudi, emphasizes the community-first approach, stating, “We don’t want to grow without lifting the ecosystem around us. If we grow, our farmers, vendors, and transporters should grow with us.” This philosophy has turned Dumont into more than an Ice Cream brand—it has become an example of equitable progress in Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.

Local sourcing is central to Dumont’s identity. As of 2024, about 60 percent of its main ingredients, including milk, honey, and ghee, come directly from farmers and cooperatives in Andhra Pradesh. By 2026, the company aims to reach 90 percent local procurement. This strategy reduces dependence on external suppliers while nurturing self-sustained regional economies.

Gudavalli now hosts Dumont’s main manufacturing unit, employing over 180 workers in logistics, cold storage, and supply chains. The hub indirectly supports more than 400 families in surrounding areas. According to the Ministry of MSME, such models help decentralize economic growth and discourage migration to cities by strengthening rural livelihoods.

Meanwhile, market research by MarkNtel forecasts the Indian Ice Cream market to touch ₹40,000 crore by 2028. The study notes that most of this growth will come from non-metro regions as consumers seek premium products closer to home. This trend favors regional centers like Vijayawada, which are rising as strong links in the national supply network.

In India’s expanding Ice Cream economy, Dumont’s story from Gudavalli illustrates the potential of patient, purpose-driven growth. As the company continues to expand globally, it stands as a model for how local industry can power both taste and transformation in equal measure.
