Hyderabad, August 20: An underground structure was reportedly discovered near the historic Qutb Shahi tombs in Golconda on Thursday.
The structure was found during excavation work near the Athara Seedi area, close to a playground beside the 400 year old tombs.
The discovery has renewed interest in long standing claims about secret passages around Golconda.
ASI To Examine Tunnel Near Qutb Shahi Tombs
Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin alerted the Archaeological Survey of India after the reported discovery.
He also sought an inspection of the site to determine the nature of the structure.
Meanwhile, the excavation has raised concerns about possible unauthorised digging near the protected heritage area.
ASI officials are expected to examine the location and assess any impact on archaeological remains.
Police deployment in the area is also being considered.
However, authorities have not established whether any illegal excavation took place.
The ASI inspection is expected to establish the structure’s age, purpose and extent.
Historic accounts and local claims have long referred to underground passages around Golconda.
Some are believed to have served as escape routes during conflicts. However, no long distance tunnel connecting Golconda Fort with Charminar has been conclusively established.
Similar structures discovered earlier have been identified as drainage channels, cellars or buried architectural remains.
