Pune police have busted an illegal arms racket operating from a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Barwani district. Officials said the network involved inter state manufacturing and trafficking of weapons. Police launched the operation in Umarti village, which is about 500 kilometres from Pune. They said the crackdown began after investigators found links between seized pistols and suppliers in Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, the police teams from both states worked together to track the source of the weapons. Officials said 50 furnaces used to make illegal weapons were destroyed during the raid.

Pune’s Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma said the action followed leads from cases registered at the Vimantal and Kale Padal police stations. “The Pune police conducted a combing operation in Madhya Pradesh. During the investigation of cases registered at the city’s Vimantal and Kale Padal police stations, we received multiple inputs about the pistol making units located in MP. Police from Pune and Madhya Pradesh jointly carried out this action,” he said. He added that raids were held at several sites and that “A total of 36 people were taken into custody.”

Officials said 21 pistols were seized in Pune over the past three weeks. They also said the accused revealed that the weapons seized in the city were brought from Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, police planned the joint operation to trace the supply chain. Sharma said, “This is a supply chain of weapons. Search is on for those who sent these weapons to Pune. Many more individuals are involved in this racket, and inquiry is still underway.”

A team of 105 police staff from Pune, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Somay Munde, took part in the operation. Officials said the investigation will continue to uncover the larger network behind the illegal arms production.
