Indian Railways Launches New Passenger Reservation System

Indian Railways | Hyderabad/Delhi, June 8 (Maxim News) : Indian Railways has announced a major upgrade to its ticket booking system, bringing relief to millions of train passengers across the country. The Ministry of Railways is set to launch a new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August.

The new system will replace the existing technology that has been in use since 1986. Officials said the upgrade aims to eliminate long-standing issues in ticket booking and improve system speed and reliability.

With the new PRS, passengers will be able to book lakhs of tickets within minutes. The system is designed to handle heavy traffic without server crashes or delays. Railway officials said this will significantly improve the digital booking experience.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the project in detail at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi. He instructed officials to ensure a smooth transition and avoid inconvenience to passengers during the system upgrade.

Indian Railways first introduced internet-based ticket booking in 2002. Since then, digital bookings have steadily increased. Today, nearly 88 percent of total railway tickets are booked through online platforms.

The Railways’ “Rail One” app, launched last year, has also shown strong growth. It has crossed 3.5 crore downloads in just one year. The app allows users to book tickets, cancel reservations, check live train status, view platform details, and raise complaints.

Currently, around 9.29 lakh tickets are booked daily through the app. Officials said this reflects the growing shift toward digital railway services.

Railways has also introduced an AI-based waiting list prediction tool this year. The tool helps passengers estimate whether their ticket will get confirmed. Its accuracy has improved to 94 percent, up from 53 percent earlier.

Officials said this system will help passengers plan travel better and reduce uncertainty in train bookings. The Railways believes the new PRS will mark a major step in India’s digital transport transformation.
