Israel And Syria Agree To Temporary Ceasefire After Deadly Clashes Leave Over 300 Dead
Damascus/Hyderabad, July 20 (Maxim News): After days of intense conflict in southern Syria’s Sweida province, Israel and Syria have agreed to a temporary ceasefire, halting the violence that has so far claimed 321 lives, including women, children, and medical personnel, according to human rights monitors.
The Syrian presidential office confirmed the ceasefire on Saturday, announcing that a special security force has been deployed in the south to ensure the situation does not escalate further. The office stated that coordinated security arrangements are in place to monitor the truce and maintain stability in the region.
Heavy Toll on Civilians Amid Sweida Clashes
The recent surge in violence has gripped Sweida, a region with a significant Druze population, sparking international concern. Reports from the ground say that fighting continues sporadically in northern and western Sweida, despite the ceasefire announcement.
Rfyan Maarouf, spokesperson for the local news outlet Sweida24, noted that although the ceasefire has eased the fighting in central areas, “clashes are still active in border regions where control is contested.”
Israel Allows Limited Security Entry Despite Tensions
In a rare concession, Israel has agreed to allow limited Syrian internal security forces into Sweida for 48 hours. This move comes despite Israel’s strong opposition to Syrian military deployments in the south, citing threats posed by Syria’s new leadership, particularly toward Druze communities in Syria, Lebanon, and Israel.
However, tensions flared again when Israel resumed attacks in Sweida early Friday, allegedly violating an earlier ceasefire agreement. Analysts say this underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the complexity of geopolitical dynamics in the region.
A Fragile Peace, For Now
While the ceasefire provides temporary relief, the situation remains highly volatile. Both countries have accused each other of provocations and violations, and humanitarian agencies are urging for immediate, unrestricted access to provide aid to affected civilians.
With the death toll climbing and the humanitarian situation worsening, global leaders have called for a long-term diplomatic solution and protection of civilian lives in the conflict zones.
