Hyderabad, Oct 14 (Maxim News) : The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is accelerating restoration works at Kapra Lake in Hyderabad, with an investment of approximately ₹35 crore to revive the water body, protect its biodiversity and restore its importance as a habitat for migratory birds.
Around 60 per cent of the restoration work has been completed, as the agency works to bring the lake back to its former glory while improving its environmental and recreational value.
Kapra Lake, which has a Full Tank Level (FTL) area of approximately 112.80 acres, is one of the 14 lakes being developed under HYDRAA’s second phase of lake restoration projects.
The initiative aims to strengthen the lake’s ecological functions, improve rainwater storage, reduce flood risks and create a healthier environment for nearby residents.
Local farmers who own land within the lake’s FTL boundaries have voluntarily come forward to support the restoration.
Inspired by HYDRAA’s lake development initiatives, the farmers reportedly handed over around 70 acres for the lake’s development. They personally met the HYDRA Commissioner and submitted their consent letters, extending voluntary support for the restoration project.
Kapra Lake Restoration Focuses on Migratory Birds and Biodiversity
Kapra Lake is recognised as an important wetland by the Central Government and is known for its ecological significance. According to information shared by HYDRA, the lake provides a habitat for more than 470 migratory bird species arriving from Australia, Europe and other parts of the world.
Beyond serving as a water body, the lake supports birds, aquatic organisms, amphibians and vegetation. Its wetland ecosystem contributes to Hyderabad’s environmental balance and provides a natural habitat for a variety of living organisms.
HYDRAA has stated that the restoration work is being undertaken with a strong focus on preserving the lake’s natural environment and biodiversity.

The objective is not merely to beautify the surroundings but to protect the wetland and preserve it for future generations.
The development plan incorporates several important ecological functions of wetlands, including floodwater management during heavy rainfall, groundwater recharge, protection of aquatic life and maintenance of environmental balance. Desilting works are being carried out to increase the lake’s depth and water-holding capacity, allowing it to store larger volumes of rainwater.
The removal of accumulated silt and waste is also intended to support the natural filtration of pollutants and contaminants in the water.
These measures are aimed at improving the lake’s ecological condition while strengthening its role in the urban environment.
Kapra Lake Restoration | Improved Water Flow, Flood Management and Public Amenities
HYDRAA is developing the lake’s inlet and outlet systems to improve the movement of rainwater into and out of the water body. Increasing its depth and storage capacity is expected to help accommodate more rainwater during heavy rainfall, supporting flood management efforts in the surrounding areas.
The agency is also installing strong fencing around the lake to protect its boundaries and prevent future encroachments. These measures are intended to safeguard the restored area and help preserve the lake’s designated extent over the long term.
Alongside ecological conservation, the restoration project includes facilities for public use. A walking track is being developed around the lake, while improvements to the surrounding environment are intended to provide residents with a cleaner and more pleasant space.
The project envisions Kapra Lake once again becoming part of everyday community life, offering a place for morning walkers, families visiting in the evenings and children spending time outdoors.
The lake’s natural surroundings and fresh air are expected to make it a more welcoming public space.
HYDRAA’s approach combines three objectives: protecting the lake and its boundaries, improving the flow and storage of rainwater, and creating a healthier environment for local communities.
With restoration works progressing, the agency aims to revive Kapra Lake as an important wetland, a habitat for migratory birds and a recreational resource for Hyderabad residents.
The ongoing ₹35 crore project seeks to balance urban development with environmental conservation, ensuring that Kapra Lake’s ecological importance and benefits to the surrounding community are preserved for the future. (Maxim News)
