Kerala Restaurant In Hyderabad Attacked Over Beef Dish

  • Hyderabad eatery attacked by vigilantes for allegedly serving beef
  • Police intervention prevents escalation at Kerala restaurant near university

In a rare and shocking incident in Hyderabad, members of the Bajrang Dal allegedly targeted a Kerala restaurant near the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) for serving beef. The restaurant, Joshyyettan’s Kerala Thattukada, located near the Osmania University campus, came under attack on Friday evening when vigilantes attempted to shut it down forcefully.

According to students from EFLU who were present at the restaurant, the group, including members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, entered the premises and asked customers to leave. They allegedly announced that the eatery would be closed for serving beef dishes. Several students confirmed that the restaurant serves Kerala cuisine, where beef and parotta combinations are a traditional delicacy enjoyed widely, including by Hindus in the state.

One of the locals who joined the protest said, “We locals thought it is a veg restaurant and we come here often to have tea and snacks. But they sell beef meat here and use one vessel to cook everything. They do not even have a food trade license, we checked it and lodged a complaint. Their menu has something called BDF – beef dry fry. Many people could have eaten it without knowing.” The time of the incident remains unclear, though students said it occurred on Friday, October 24, in the evening or late night.

When contacted, officials from the Osmania University police station did not respond. However, according to individuals present during the incident, the police did later arrive on the scene and prevented further escalation. Despite the confrontation, no reports of injuries were received.

Consumption of beef is not banned in Telangana, and several hotels across Hyderabad serve beef openly. However, most mainstream restaurants refrain from including it on their menus. Long-standing Kerala eateries like Akson, for instance, do not serve beef.

The incident near EFLU marks the first reported case in Hyderabad where a Kerala restaurant has been directly targeted by right-wing vigilantes for serving beef, reflecting growing tensions around food choices and cultural identity.
