Lok Sabha Sees Heated Exchanges Over Key Constitutional Bills

Hyderabad, April 16: Lok Sabha witnessed sharp exchanges as key constitutional bills were introduced on April 16, 2026. The debate marked the start of a three day special Parliament session.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Constitution Amendment Bill and the Delimitation Bill 2026. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah moved to introduce the Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill.

Opposition leaders strongly objected to the move. K. C. Venugopal said the bills could alter the constitutional framework. He questioned the intent behind their introduction.

The Speaker intervened amid the uproar. He asked members to raise objections during formal debate. He assured adequate time for discussion.

Amit Shah responded to the criticism. He said objections should focus on procedural aspects at this stage. He accused the Opposition of debating merits prematurely.

Samajwadi Party opposed the bills on constitutional grounds. Party leaders warned that federal structure could be affected. They demanded withdrawal of the proposals.

SP MP Dharmendra Yadav called for immediate implementation of the women’s reservation law. His remarks triggered further debate.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected to demands for a separate quota for Muslim women. He urged members to avoid communal arguments.

Asaduddin Owaisi also opposed the bills. He said they could weaken federal principles and parliamentary democracy.

The government and Opposition remain divided over delimitation and women’s reservation. The Centre plans to implement women’s quota from the 2029 elections. However, Opposition parties allege that delimitation is being pushed indirectly.
