Mumbai/Hyderabad, July 10 (Maxim News): “The formation of a seven members’ committee for drafting the guidelines of the Uniform Civil Code is an initiative that we have promised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,” said Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar. Talking to the media, he added that the aim was to obtain views from all quarters and introduce the UCC bill in the winter session of the assembly in December.”
Shelar further said that the expert panel had been tasked with the technical job of drafting the UCC bill.” He noted that during the previous parliamentary session, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified to the House that a committee of experts would be constituted to draft the Uniform Civil Code law for Maharashtra. A seven-member committee has now been formed under the chairmanship of former Justice Ranjana Desai, including a former Advocate General, a former Chief Secretary, and various other experts. Additionally, Shelar said that the government will collect everyone’s views prior to putting forth the bill in the December session.
As per news reports, on Thursday Fadnavis stated that the committee for drafting the UCC rules in Maharashtra shall be headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai. The panel consists of seven members, comprising three former judges from the Supreme Court or High Court, one constitutional expert, one former bureaucrat, and two representatives from the social sector. Alongside Desai, the members include former High Court Justice RC Chavan, former High Court Justice SG Mehere, former Chief Secretary of Maharashtra DK Jain, former Advocate General of Maharashtra Birendra Saraf, social activist Padmashri Ramesh Patange, and educationalist Suvarna Rawal.
Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that the committee will comprehensively examine all legal, social, and administrative aspects related to the Uniform Civil Code before submitting a report with recommendations to the state government within six months. The government will then finalise the draft UCC based on the committee’s findings. He added that the state government aims to introduce and pass the Uniform Civil Code bill in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council during the upcoming Nagpur winter session.
The Chief Minister affirmed that the government will follow all constitutional and legal procedures to ensure effective steps are taken towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code across Maharashtra. This move occurs amidst growing national discussions on the UCC. Uttarakhand recently became the first state post-Independence to enact a Uniform Civil Code, and Maharashtra is expected to study its experience closely while preparing its own draft. (Maxim News)
